When I moved to India, I shopped quite a bit. But there were many things that I did not get, because I thought they would be available here. Here’s a list of things I would definitely consider getting if you have kids:
  • Craft Supplies:  Supplies such as construction paper, chenille stems, foam cut-outs, stamps, stencils, pom-poms, beads, popsicle sticks, washable markers, punches, safety scissors, etc.
  • Craft Kits:  Some craft kits are available here, but they are more expensive out here. Simple craft kits from Rose Art or Totally Me are definitely worth taking. Especially kits like finger-puppets, soap, candles, stickers, flowers, sand-art, etc.
  • Clothes ….stock up.  Yes, you get fantastic clothes here …. Especially if you like a lot of “stuff” written or ironed on to the clothes. If you are the type you likes smart, but simple, cotton tees and shorts/cargos, without too many frills and fanciful stuff…..then stock up.
  • Swimming gear – bathing suits, caps, swim-goggles, etc.
  • Backpacks for school – the nicer ones here are quite pricey.
  • Bycicles/Tricycles – especially if you already own them. Just consider if you will have a place to store them, and whether your child will be able to ride it within your compound. The roads are most certainly NOT safe to ride your bike.
  • Any electronics – iPods, PlayStations, Gameboys etc…. While easily available here, they are much more expensive.

Things that are easily available here:

  • Stationery Items.  Things such as water-colours, crayons, colouring pencils, erasers, pens, pencils, sharpeners, brushes, glue, glue-sticks etc…are available very easily, and much cheaper over here.
  • Toys – especially Fisher-Price, Mattel, Funskool, as well as all the popular board games. The only ones I have NOT seen here are the Cranium games (cadoo, hullaballoo, balloon lagoon, ziggity, etc.)
  • Books – huge selection. Much cheaper as well.

  1. Thanks a lot. We are r2i’ing soon and I did think about crafts but
decided against it. I will definitely pick some of them after reading ur post. Most people suggest toys are they are expensive there but no mentioned that its not. Will think about that one.
Do you have a list of stuff you bought especially to take back ?

  2. Hi Seema,
All the Disney Princess Toys, Lego Sets, Matchbox Sets, etc are more expensive here. Most games & board games such as UNO, Play Doh, Guess Who, Mastermind, Life, etc are not that different in pricing. Anything that is manufactured here, is comparably priced (if not lower). Generally, toys that are imported (from US), are almost double in price. LOTS of “dollar store” types of cheap toys available as well.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a list of stuff that I bought to take back, since I didn’t know all this till after I arrived here. So, on my subsequent trips I try and stock up. With limited suitcase space, I mainly like to get all the craft items such as Model Magic, and craft kits.

    CK.
