In an unexpected change, against the common expectations, Obama and McCain seem to be in a statistical dead heat. All votes are going to be important (remember the 600 chads of Florida that determined the election 8 years ago?). All the more reason that US citizens who are out of the country in November should register to vote by absentee ballot.

There is a relatively simple procedure to register to obtain and vote through an absentee ballot. The Federal Voter Assistance Program website has the comprehensive instructions and forms that allow you to register for voting and request an absentee ballot.

You will need to fill out a Voter Registration/Absentee Ballot request as per the instructions required by your state (the last state you lived in or were registered to vote in as the case may be). You can send in your forms via mail, fax or email (again, instructions and cover sheets are included). You will need to find the address to send the materials too (vary by county). If you are emailing or faxing, I suggest calling your county election office and determining how they best like to receive the information.

Note, your registration has to be done latest by 10/31 in case you are receiving the ballot via email. And you need to have the ballot sent in by 11/4. Don’t delay – there’s still time by you need to act soon!
