When you have just arrived in India, hiring a maid is not necessarily your top-most priority.  But sooner or later you will need to hire a maid(s).  For most, this hiring process has some angst.  I have given below some questions to ask at the “interview”.  Many of them may not be relevant to the “job”, but these are the questions most people ask….and the maids expect these type of questions.  By asking these questions, you are letting the maid know that you are rather savvy when it comes to hiring staff, and its not the first time you are doing so.  Take all answers with a generous pinch of salt, since many would lie to you about their “job experience”.

  • Where have you worked before?
  • Are you currently employed?
  • What kind of work did you do? (are you doing?)
  • Why did you leave? (Why are you looking to leave).
  • When can you start?
  • What kind of job are you looking for? (Cleaning or Kitchen help/Cooking)
  • Who all are there in your family?
  • What does your husband (if married) / father – mother (if unmarried) do?
  • How old are your children?
  • Do they go to school? Who will take care of them when you are working?
  • What are the timings that you want? How early can you come? How late can you stay till?
  • Can you be punctual? What time will you actually come at?
  • How will you commute? How long does it take?
  • Where do you stay?
  • Do you have a phone I can reach you at?
  • Will you be able to provide me with a copy of your ration card?

A good idea would be to just gather the information while you are asking questions, without disclosing too much about what it is you are looking for….especially with regard to timings.  The reason being, that many would agree to whatever you want if they are desperate for a job.  After getting the job, they may keep looking for something else that suits their timings better (& leave you in a lurch).  Or after the first month or so will become erratic in their timings.
